Tenochtitlan (The Impossible City)
The Mayan civilization existed for more than 2,000 years before the Aztecs. After watching both videos, answer the following:
Imagine that you are a Mayan transported 600 years into your future, from the golden age of the Mayans (AD 850) to the golden age of the Aztecs (AD 1450).
1. What would you notice that would be similar in both civilizations?
2. What would seem new and different to you about the Aztec people and culture?
3. Explain why you would see similarities between these two civilizations AND why you would expect some differences.
1. Something that is similar in both civilizations is they played games and they traded.
ReplyDelete2. Something new is schools for nobles and something different is they put stakes in the ground to make their land bigger.
3. I see similarities between the cites because they both traded, played games, and they both had priest and priestess. I would expect some differences because the Aztec lived 2000 years after the Maya and because they lived at the time when the Spanish lived.
1. They both built temples and traded and played games.
ReplyDelete2. They had a different type of farming technique were you would put sticks and mud on water and plant on top of that.
3. Because they are a civilization that grew close to were the Mayan and Olmec's grew so there bound to have some similarities even though they grew up separately. I would expect some differences because the Aztec's were there farther in time than the Olmec's and Mayan's
1) They are kind of like the Maya and the Olmec but with different things;they both have temples and are very tied in with religion.

3)I would expect the similarities to be with the Maya because it was after the collapse of the Maya and the remaining Mayans would probably collide with the Aztec.
The differences would be because they were different civilizations and since the Maya have been away from their civilization for a while and after a few generations traditions are left behind and forgotten, so they got along just fine with the Aztec.
1. They both have brutal sacrifices, traded, and played games.

3. I would see similarities because of the story I learned about the Egyptians on Discovery channel they said and proved that different parts of the dessert built the pyramids the exact same way without any communication, spying on, nothing I think the same situation could have happened with the Aztec and the Maya before the pyramids.

ReplyDelete2.) The school ways girls would be taught in schools not at home anymore. Then they would probably wait to become an older age to learn the new things they need to learn.
3.) Which we all know they both are the Aztecs, they both make every thing look beautiful, they both entertained but probably little less entertainment for the people of Tenochtitlan. The building and creating probably took long so not much entertainment for there favorite games like Ptolemy, and The Ball Game.
1)They both believed in human sacrifice and also had many temples.
ReplyDelete2)They had different things for boys and girls. They also had a vast canal system and had new ways to build buildings.
3)Their similar in ways such as there temples, their calendars, and the huge buildings. The Aztecs have a new system because if they had the same one as the Mayan they would only live as long as the Mayan. They are newer because of the canal systems, and education and the writing is different.

3) They way I see similar things is in the calenders, big buildings, and the use of water. The reason I expect differences is because there from two different times.
1. Both civilizations used cacao beans, they both had priests, and they also had a form of a ball game, and more.

3. I would see similarities because they didn't make a brand new civilization they copied the Maya. I expected differences because they are not the exact same of the Maya.

3. What makes me see similarities is the calendars, buildings, and chocolate. The differences are time, land, and language.
1. They both had similar games, trading systems, nobility, and temples. The Mayan game Pok-ta-Pok and the Aztec game Tlachtli both used rubber balls and teams. Their trading system both used cacao beans as currency. The Mayans also had a king, while Aztecs had an emperor. They both had pyramids like temples that were used in religious practices and sacrifice.
ReplyDelete2. The Aztecs had moving canals, which allowed them to quickly paddle through the cities. They also discovered the wheel, but did not put it to good use. Instead, they used it to make children’s toys. If the Mayans discovered the wheel, I think they would have put it to use. The game patolli is something new the Aztecs did, which was the first form of gambling. They also used the chinampas to expand their land.
3. There are many material and farming similarities between the Mayans and the Aztecs. They both lived in almost the same area, so they might have used some of the same natural resources. I think they would also believe in gods since science was very primitive back then. Some of the differences I would expect to see include their architecture, transportation system, and their level of knowledge. The Mayans had primitive temples made of regular stone, while Aztecs made it more modernized with finished marble. The Mayans also carried everything, while Aztecs used cargo boats. The Aztecs also discovered and invented the wheel, although, they did not put it to good use. This may have been due to their level of knowledge and the 600 years between them.
1: They both did things for gods and were a farming group.

3: Things that are kind of the same is their temples, calendars, and rituals. The different parts are that they are both from different times and don't play the same ball game, because the Aztecs come in 600 years later.
1) For both the Mayans and the Aztecians, they had similar clothing, games, and nobility standards.

3) I would expect to see similarities because the were so close in time, in a way. I would also expect them to be different because the resided far away from each other.

ReplyDelete2) The Aztecs expanded their land. and colored every detail in there city. The Aztec's schools or what you learned was based on your gender.
3) I would say that there would be many similarity's between the two civilizations because the Mayans left a lot of techniques for the Aztec such as milpa farming and slash-and-burn.
I would think they would be different because all the techniques that the Mayans left, were taken to a whole new level by the Aztecs.
1) The Mayans and the Aztec both have a similar looking calender and they both had sacrifice.

ReplyDelete2 The Maya and Aztecs are different because the Aztecs have different types of schools based on gender. I don't get why girls where thought to be weaker back then...just.. WHY?
3Well you would expect similaritys because the civilizations lived in the same area and the Aztecs "borrowed" things from the Maya.
You would expect things to be different because well, it's a different civilization first of all, but also because they had difference in believes, clothing, and gods.

1. The Mayans and the Aztecs are similar because they both enjoyed ball games, used maize and coaco beans as their main, trading, and clothing.

3. The way I see similar things are the calendar, big temples and houses, and the usage of water.
The reason I expect differences is because the time periods were very different from each other.

ReplyDelete2) Something new that I have found is their intense gruesome torture methods. Where in my time all we would do is cut their heart out then spill their guts with a sharp pyramid point.
3) I see the similarities because some things have to stay the same in some possible way. I see the differences because over time some things change over time.

3.I see similarities because some of these things might be the only way to survive. I see different things as well because it is possible to find another and easier way to do it that way.

ReplyDelete2. Somethings that seems new to me is that the Aztec school system was based o if you were a girl or boy and that they have canals running through the whole town that can help with transportation and land building.
3. I see similarities between the Aztec and the Maya because the Aztec came right after the maya and they probably took some of there traditions and religions and the big sacred temples. I would also see some differences because they are from a different time period.

ReplyDelete2.The Aztecs seemed to have a revolutionary idea of making their city in the middle of a lake.
3.I would expect similarities between both civilizations because both did not have very different technology. I would expect differences because as a different civilization, they have a very different culture and belief system.

I see differences because the Aztecs could not have copied the Maya for everything in the way that they had different languages and sacrifice. I see similarities because of how they played games for fun such as the Ball Games.
1. Their similarities are that they both are in their Golden Ages and they have their perfect cities or city states built. They both have their capitals built and they are booming with people and excitement because they both have their city at the highest point with people and food. Also they both have their city or city state filled with tons of people.
ReplyDelete2. What I would seem as new is a different way of doing something that the Mayan's didn't have because they didn't think of it. Also what I would think as old is a way the Mayans did things that the Aztec's also did because I have already experienced that. For example, the Aztec children going to school and the Mayan children not. Also the education because the Mayan's had a different system of doing things than the Aztecs. Last their calendar, the calendar would be new because the Mayan's had unlucky days and lucky days unlike the Aztec's where they didn't have the special days they just had a calendar to keep track of time. Also their farming systems were different from the Mayan's because they each had a different way of harvesting.
3. You would see them because they have similar ideas but don't have the exact same ways of doing it. They may be similar because they are still human and we think a like. You would see differences because the Aztec's may of had an idea that the Mayan's didn't even think of or the other way around. Also not everybody thinks exactly the same everybody has a different idea or way of doing things compared to others.
1. One thing that is similar is the colorful culture and paintings.

3. I would expect similariteis since they both didn't have very different technology and differences because of the different beliefs/ religion.
1. Both cultures use the relatively same type of calendar, both use temples as religious centers, and both have priests that are second to the kings or rulers.
ReplyDelete2. They each have a differently organized method for teaching boys, (method for teaching girls is mostly the same), they have different ways of punishing people, and they each had a different way of getting water for their crops and villagers.
3. Some concepts would be similar to the Mayan's concepts because in historical terms, the two civilization were not that far apart, and the Aztec barrowed some ideas from the Maya. Some things would be different because they are both two different civilizations, and each had some of it's own ideas and concepts.
